Despite the fact that fuel cells were invented in 1838, hydrogen has only recently been seriously considered as a potential source of power for commercial vehicles.

AEMO sees new and innovative technologies like fuel cells emerging across the energy sector all the time. This video is the first in a series exploring the impact of these shifts in technology and transport.

AEMO visited Toyota Australia – a car manufacturer undertaking trials with three hydrogen powered cars - to find out what makes these cars different and what the potential benefits could be for consumers.

Want to know more about how the fuel cell system works inside a vehicle? The video below from Toyota Europe shows the internal workings of a car powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology.
