The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) network operator Evoenergy has taken a step closer to rolling out a viable renewable gas source with the launch of their first-of-its-kind hydrogen test facility earlier this week.

Born from a partnership between Evoenergy and the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), the project will test whether renewable hydrogen gas made from excess solar and wind energy can be used in existing gas networks and appliances to replace natural gas.

Up to 100% hydrogen gas will be tested in several real-life scenarios where natural gas is currently being used, through a three-phase rollout over the coming months.

The test facility will first focus on existing Australian network components before moving onto phases two and three where hydrogen will be tested as a broader energy storage source and on household appliances.

We sat down with the Head of Gas at Evoenergy, Will Yeap, to find out what the project involves and how this fits into the future of Australia’s energy industry.

Tune in below to find out exactly what the hydrogen test facility has in store.
