Bright lights, harbour city

Now in its eleventh year, VIVID Sydney is one of the biggest (and brightest) cultural festivals in the New South Wales capital. It’s also a fantastic public showcase for creative use of energy.

Once a year some of Sydney’s most famous landmarks are transformed by very innovative artists who use 3D mapped light projections to illuminate the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and Museum of Contemporary Art to name but a few standouts. In addition to music, cultural workshops and discussions, there are nine precincts across the city dedicated to light installations and projections during the three week festival. But with the many projections and installations, how does a festival like VIVID manage its energy use?

A major electricity network business in the National Energy Market, TransGrid (NSW based transmission infrastructure provider), has been the official energy partner of Vivid Sydney for several years. TransGrid will provide, as they have in previous years, a detailed breakdown of the event’s energy use, enabling the Vivid Sydney team to develop ongoing strategies to reduce costs and effectively manage its carbon footprint.

TransGrid’s focus on innovation to drive efficiencies makes their collaboration with Vivid Sydney a natural fit. According to Vivid Sydney, through ongoing close collaboration between their partners Destination NSW, The Banksia Foundation and Informed 365, and the resultant online platform and sustainability baseline, in 2018 Destination NSW was also able to:

  • Offset 83,616.96kWh through the purchase of Large Generation Certificates (Green Power) from certified NSW generators

  • Offset 267.5 tonnes CO2e through the purchase of accredited carbon offset credits in Regional NSW projects

The annual illumination of the harbour city begins this weekend, and the VIVID Sydney festival runs from 24 May until the 15 June 2019.
