AEMO is working towards implementing an Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) power system simulation platform, HYPERSIM. This new simulation platform complements our existing PSCAD EMT modelling capability.
Australia’s power system is experiencing a transition from conventional synchronous generation, such as coal-fired power stations, to inverter-based generation, such as wind and solar farms, at a pace and penetration level not seen in any other major interconnected system in the world. Due to the difference in how inverter-based plants operate compared to synchronous plants, there has been a shift to EMT models that more accurately capture and predict power system behaviour.
Even with advanced computing hardware, current modelling tools used to run EMT studies on a power system level can take hours to complete. HYPERSIM will allow AEMO to perform these studies in minutes. This increase in performance will help AEMO quickly analyse network disturbances to better assist with operational management of power system security.
As the National Electricity Market (NEM) power system continues to rapidly evolve, being able to model new operating conditions will be critical to maintaining a reliable and minimally constrained supply of electricity.
The project is currently reviewing delivery timelines for the Real-Time Simulator.
