TasNetworks has recently published a Project Specification Consultation Report (PSCR) for additional interconnection between Victoria and Tasmania.

The PSCR is the first consultation as part of the Regulatory Investment Test – Transmission (RIT-T), and is part of a larger feasibility and business case assessment for a second Bass Strait interconnector. The assessment is jointly funded by TasNetworks and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

The identified need for a second Bass Strait interconnector is that the characteristics of customer demand, generation and storage resources vary significantly between Tasmania and the rest of the National Electricity Market (NEM). Increased interconnection capacity between Tasmania and the other NEM regions has the potential to realise a net economic benefit by capitalising on this diversity.

The RIT-T requires consideration of all credible options that would meet the identified need. A summary of the Project Specification Consultation Report is available on the AEMO website and TasNetworks website.  The full Project Specification Consultation Report can be downloaded from the TasNetworks website.  A number of public forums are being scheduled to discuss the consultation report.

Submissions in response to the PSCR are due by 26 October, 2018 and should be emailed to projectmarinus@tasnetworks.com.au.
