The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has today announced the appointment of Mr Tony Chappel in the newly created Executive Leadership Team (ELT) role, Chief External Affairs Officer.

The transformation that is occurring throughout the energy system requires a strategic and collaborative engagement approach to provide clarity and direction to a broad range of stakeholders during this transition.

“We are delighted to welcome Tony not only to the organisation, but as an important member of the ELT. Tony has worked at the intersection of energy, climate and social policy, and his broad external affairs experience both in the corporate energy sector and in government will enable AEMO to further enhance its strong relationships and deliver on its commitment to stakeholders,” said Ms Audrey Zibelman, AEMO’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Chappel joins AEMO from AGL Energy Limited, where he currently works as General Manager for Government, Media and Community Relations. During his time with AGL, Tony has worked closely with policy makers on issues relating to the energy transition, and has been responsible for leading the organisation’s government, community and media  strategies.

Prior to AGL, Mr Chappel held a senior role within the New South Wales government, and has gained substantial experience working within the resources sector both locally and abroad. Mr Chappel worked at the Smith School for Enterprise and the Environment at the University of Oxford after completing post graduate study in energy policy in the UK on a Chevening Scholarship.

Mr Chappel has Bachelor degrees in Economics and Law, a Master of Business Administration, a Masters in Energy Policy from Imperial College London and a Master in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford.

Upon commencement in July, Mr Chappel will have a broad operational remit, responsible for media, communications, and government and stakeholder relations.
