This year, nine new graduates from around the nation were hired as a part of AEMO’s coveted Graduate Development Program (GDP). They have landed in teams across the organisation as diverse as energy forecasting, gas operations, market analysis and external affairs.

The GDP is designed for successful applicants to shape their future and kickstart their career in the energy industry. AEMO’s program allows graduates to develop their knowledge and skills through providing real responsibilities and significant contributions to key projects with guidance from mentors.

The graduates complete four nine-month rotations in different sections of the business, gaining a comprehensive understanding of what AEMO does whilst developing key skills. Those who complete the GDP with AEMO are given every opportunity to contribute towards solving the challenges facing the energy industry through fast-paced, dynamic and on-the-job learning. The rotations are structured to maximise personal development and are set in line with operational needs, discipline type and business demand.

If you’re hoping to be among future applicants who make it into the program, you’ll need to demonstrate a passion for energy markets, display analytical and problem-solving skills, have a customer mindset and be an excellent communicator. You will also need to have recently completed (or nearly completed) a degree in commerce, econometrics, economics, engineering (electrical - power systems, chemical – gas operations), information systems, information technology, mathematics, science or statistical modelling.

The recruitment process is well structured and starts with an online application followed by an initial phone screening, then participation in assessment centre workshops, psychometric assessment, and pre-employment checks. The process is a collaborative one with AEMO key stakeholders from the business involved in the review and recommendations.

Applications for next year’s program are due to open mid-2020 on the AEMO website. If those applicants are successful, they will receive a job offer in September and the commence the program in February 2021. They may also get the opportunity to work at a site of their choice, with AEMO offices currently located in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Norwest and Perth.
