Audrey Zibelman, Managing Director and CEO of AEMO, yesterday delivered a keynote address to the CSIRO Energy Science Symposium 2019 which was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industry Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia’s national science agency, focused on shaping Australia’s future through scientific innovation and technology.
At this year’s CSIRO 2019 Energy Science Symposium at the MCG, AEMO’s Ms Zibelman gave a keynote address to the audience of esteemed scientists, engineers and technologists titled Challenges (and opportunities) for energy in Australia beyond 2020.
The presentation highlighted the evolution of Australia’s power systems which is being transformed through the advent of new technologies and consumer preferences. Ms Zibelman emphasised the system challenges and opportunities and areas of vulnerability and likely disruption.
She reiterated that AEMO’s approach for the next 3 years will emphasise proactive change through strategic pillars that deliver benefits for consumers, system participants and stakeholders. This Council of Australian Governments (COAG) endorsed plan for operational priorities to ensure readiness, will focus on:
- System reliability
- System security
- Efficiency
A comprehensive evaluation of these strategic details and the likely changes that will occur across the next two decades in the National Electricity Market (NEM), from Distributed Energy Resources and Virtual Power Plants to data access, were set out in AEMO’s Integrated Systems Plan.
