Update - Possible intervention to manage power system security in SA region

Refer AEMO Electricity Market Notice 112218

The synchronous generating units currently expected to be synchronised in SA from 0000 hrs 14/12/2023 will be inadequate to maintain a secure operating state in SA .

AEMO estimates that, in the absence of sufficient market response by 1700 hrs 13/12/2023, AEMO may need to intervene by issuing a direction requiring one or more SA synchronous generating unit(s) to operate or remain synchronised to maintain power system security in SA.

Non-credible contingency event - TAS region - 13/12/2023

At 1324 hrs the Hadspen - Palmerston No.3 & No.4 110 kV lines tripped.

AEMO did not instruct load shedding.

AEMO has not been advised of any disconnection of bulk electrical load.

The cause of this non credible contingency event is not known at this stage.

AEMO declares a Forecast LOR2 condition under clause 4.8.4(b) of the National Electricity Rules for the NSW region for the following Period:

[1.] From 1530 hrs 14/12/2023 to 1930 hrs 14/12/2023.
The forecast capacity reserve requirement is 1259 MW.
The minimum capacity reserve available is 344 MW.

AEMO is seeking a market response.

AEMO has not yet estimated the latest time at which it would need to intervene through an AEMO intervention event.

Fast Frequency Response Market - Increase in R1 FCAS volume 18 December 2023.

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

Following review of the operation of the Very Fast FCAS market, from 1300 hrs AEST on Monday 18 December AEMO will:

Increase the cap on dispatch of Very Fast Raise (R1) Contingency FCAS from 175 MW to 225 MW

Retain the existing cap on dispatch of Very Fast Lower (L1) Contingency FCAS at 100 MW

No other changes to the dispatch of Very Fast FCAS or FCAS constraint equation changes will be made on this date

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

AEMO's weather service provider has issued forecast temperatures equal to or greater than the NEM Local Temperature Alert Levels for listed weather stations below.

QLD
Dalby Ap (37+ Deg C): 17th Dec

The NEM Local Temperature Alert Levels are:

Launceston Ti Tree Bend: 33 Deg C, Dalby Airport: 37 Deg C, for all other selected weather stations: 39 Deg C.

AEMO requests Market Participants to:

1. review the weather forecast in the local area where their generating units / MNSP converter stations are located and,

2. if required, update the available capacity in their dispatch offers or availability submissions consistent with the forecast temperatures.
