WEM SCED and Constraints

This course provides a comprehensive overview of Security-Constrained Economic Dispatch in the WEM and an understanding of the role of constraints in determining outcomes.

The course assumes that Participants have previously attended the WEM Overview Course or have a basic familiarity with the WEM, Security-Constrained Economic Dispatch, and power systems in general.

This course is delivered in-person or fully online over two full days.

  • The role of constraints in the WEM
  • Power system limitations
  • Formulation of network constraints
  • Frequency Co-optimised Essential System Services (FCESS) and their market mechanisms
  • Operational Forecasting and Planning
  • Co-optimisation and dispatch
  • Interpreting market outcomes, including constraint outcomes and price setting
Learning Outcomes:

Attendees of the course will gain an understanding of the key concepts behind the WEM’s Security Constrained Economic Dispatch, including power system limitations and the mechanisms available to manage these limitations. Attendees will also gain an understanding how network and FCESS constraints are formulated and the role they have in influencing dispatch outcomes.
