Power System Operators Training Framework (PSOT)

Introduction

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) oversees a rapidly evolving energy market. In its role of ensuring the secure, reliable and efficient operation of Australia’s electricity and gas systems, AEMO continues to adapt to the dynamic needs of the sector.

Strategic Objectives

As part of the energy transition, AEMO has identified two key strategic imperatives:

  1. Building a Skilled and Capable Workforce Across the Australian Energy Sector

AEMO is committed to fostering a proficient and capable community of practitioners to support the ongoing development and resilience of the Australian energy industry.

  1. Industry-Wide Training Standardisation and Consistency

Under the direction of the National Electricity Market Operations Committee (NEMOC), AEMO has progressed to establish a standardised, industry-wide training framework. This initiative aims to ensure that control room operators and generator participants are equipped with the requisite skills and competencies to operate effectively within the evolving energy landscape. The PSOT Framework establishes clear standards and accountabilities for the effective and flexible delivery of needs-based training for power system operators.

Project Overview

AEMO engaged Rely on Nutec (previously Thomson Bridge), a leading education and advisory service organisation within the electricity supply industry, to:

  1. Develop the Power System Operator Training Framework (PSOT)
  2. Pilot the development and deployment of initial courseware (the Pilot) aligned with the Framework

The next phase of this initiative encompasses:

  1. Commercialisation of the training program – pilot modules
  2. Deployment of courseware
  3. Ongoing development of training materials in alignment with the PSOT Framework

Details on available modules, development news and progress towards this initiative will be updated on this page, however for further information, please contact Daniel.Lavis@aemo.com.au or Alexis.Bowman@aemo.com.au.
