The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) confirms it issued directions to AusNet Services to shed load to maintain power system security in Victoria and South Australia during the evening peak.

This direction was required following record setting temperatures that significantly exceeded all forecasts across both states, resulting in sustained high electricity demand.

No residential or commercial load was lost, however large industrial user Alcoa was required to reduce production between approximately 7.10pm (AEDT) and 8.50pm (AEDT) via the power system’s emergency management processes. AEMO is appreciative of Alcoa’s immediate response and support to securing the power system.

This direction followed the activation of all available resources procured under the Reliability and Emergency Reserve Trader mechanism in both Victoria and South Australia this afternoon.

AEMO is continuing to closely manage the south east power system, with elevated temperatures forecast in Victoria for Friday, 25 January, and will utilise all available resources to maintain power system security.
