On Monday 1 July 2019, AEMO welcomed our 10-year anniversary as Australia's independent market and system operator.

AEMO was established by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) to manage the National Electricity Market (NEM) and gas markets. In doing so, we strengthened the national character of energy market governance by drawing together the responsibility for electricity and gas market functions, NEM system operations, operation of Victoria's gas transmission network, and national transmission planning.

This is a proud milestone!

It's also a time to reflect and celebrate how AEMO has developed and supported the needs of our members, the industry and all consumers over the last decade.

AEMO's responsibilities have grown with the evolution of Australia's energy industry

As you can see from the above timeline, along our journey AEMO has taken on a progressively larger range of responsibilities, including the operation of the Western Australian electricity system and markets, and several gas market functions including the WA Gas Bulletin Board and Gas Statement of Opportunities.

In this time, we've demonstrated leadership in converting emerging challenges in the way energy is produced, delivered and consumed into sustained advantages for consumers, meeting the essential requirements of affordable, secure and reliable energy.

We'll shortly launch our 2020-23 Corporate Plan, outlining the next exciting chapter for AEMO. We are excited about the future!
