System operations

The National Electricity Market (NEM) is built on the NEM power system, and its effectiveness relies on the power system remaining secure and reliable.

In this context, ‘security’ means that the system continues operating within defined technical limits, even if a major power system element (such as a generator or interconnector) is unexpectedly disconnected. ‘Reliable’ means that the capacity to produce and transport electricity will be sufficient to meet the demand for electricity.

AEMO’s role as system operator is to maintain system security and reliability in accordance with the standards defined in the National Electricity Law, National Electricity Rules and by the Australian Energy Market Commission’s Reliability Panel.

This section of the site provides information on the services, mechanisms and standards that help to maintain a secure and reliable power system. It also includes analysis of key challenges to the NEM power system, as well as reviews of AEMO’s performance in system operations.
